Nacer Belkacem (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0346363\/?ref_=fn_all_nme_1\">Samir Guesmi<\/a>) is a man who feels he has outgrown his station in life and simply wants <em>more<\/em>. He sends his children to a private school he cannot afford and similarly covets out-of-reach luxury objects. Nacer is a man dead-set on removing his family from the setting of the public\u2014insisting instead that for his children\u2019s success they must rub shoulders with members of the Quebecois elite in the private world of the rich. Each character in the film is portrayed in a very humanistic light\u2014both the good faith actors and the bad. Sadly, that kind of story-telling leaves very little room for analysis, as the contradictions of the characters come pre-packaged. There is, though, one revelatory moment in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiff.net\/films\/the-cost-of-heaven\">The Cost of Heaven<\/a><\/em>, and it is a surprising commentary on cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/The-Cost-Of-Heaven_still_forweb3-1024x683.jpg?wsr\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-623306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/The-Cost-Of-Heaven_still_forweb3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/The-Cost-Of-Heaven_still_forweb3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/The-Cost-Of-Heaven_still_forweb3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/The-Cost-Of-Heaven_still_forweb3.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image courtesy of TIFF.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When Nacer, in his desperation for cash, kidnaps the child heir of the Novak fortune, he demands that the ransom be paid in Bitcoin. It is refreshing to see cryptocurrency, which is so often presented as some kind of financial messiah, presented as a means for crime. Here <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1931662\/\">Denis<\/a> makes a very prudent point, as the anonymity associated with the movements of cryptocurrency make it the perfect fulcrum upon which large scale financial fraud and money laundering can rest. Although <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiff.net\/films\/the-cost-of-heaven\">The Cost of Heaven<\/a><\/em> has a tendency to ramble, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0346363\/?ref_=fn_all_nme_1\">Guesmi<\/a>\u2019s tortured performance is strong enough to lead one to the small revelatory kernels along the
