Alumni successes\u2014such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm5576953\/\">Chandler Levack<\/a>, whose film <em>Mile End Kicks<\/em> opens this year\u2019s Special Presentations programme\u2014reinforce TIFF\u2019s reputation as one of the most influential stops on the global circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTIFF has always been about more than showcasing film\u2014it\u2019s about shaping the future of cinema,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiff.net\/smt\/anita-lee\">Anita Lee<\/a>, TIFF\u2019s chief programming officer and a long-time champion of emerging voices and diversity. \u201cWe design our labs to reflect where the industry is going, and what excites a new generation of creators and audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One standout initiative is the K-Story Fund, launched with<a href=\"https:\/\/cjenm.com\/en\/\"> CJ ENM<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/kofic.or.kr\/\">KOFIC<\/a> to support North American filmmakers of Korean descent\u2014an effort Lee says \u201cshows the global intersectionality that defines contemporary cinema.\u201d The program\u2019s impact is already visible. Filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm2096544\/\">Lloyd Lee Choi<\/a>, a participant, recently premiered his debut feature, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiff.net\/films\/lucky-lu\">Lucky Lu<\/a><\/em>, at Cannes. \u201cWe\u2019re incredibly proud to see that kind of trajectory, and to have played a role in it,\u201d Lee notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another recent success is the No Drama lab, developed with <em>Get Out<\/em> director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1443502\/\">Jordan Peele<\/a>\u2019s Monkeypaw Productions and Universal to elevate genre filmmaking. It drew the highest number of submissions of any TIFF lab to date, with selected works set for a special showcase at this year\u2019s festival. \u201cThat kind of response tells us we\u2019ve tapped into something urgent and alive in the zeitgeist,\u201d says Lee. Always looking ahead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiff.net\/\">TIFF<\/a> is preparing TIFF: The Market, a 2026 expansion that will unite industry access, financing, and creative support under one roof. \u201cThe new market will let us support filmmakers not just at the premiere stage, but through development and industry connections,\u201d Lee explains. \u201cIt\u2019s a full ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a time when funding for the arts and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives face rollbacks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiff.net\/\">TIFF<\/a> remains committed. The program website ensures that \u201cat least 50% of selected participants will be BIPOC and that at least 50% will be women\u2014this work is core to who we are,\u201d says Lee. \u201cIt\u2019s how we ensure the longevity and relevance of global cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, two filmmakers from TIFF\u2019s talent pipeline\u2014each with a distinct vision\u2014share their stories, as well as prudent advice for the next generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/portrait-copy-2-683x1024.jpg?wsr\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-623066\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/portrait-copy-2-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/portrait-copy-2-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/portrait-copy-2-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/portrait-copy-2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Anita Lee: photographed by Norman Wong.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI trained as an actress,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm2199384\/\">Eva Thomas<\/a>, \u201cbut I got frustrated with the kinds of roles available for Indigenous people.\u201d That frustration became a turning point. Thomas\u2014a writer, director, and producer from Walpole Island First Nation\u2014left Los Angeles and returned to Canada, where she saw more opportunities to tell the stories she wanted. \u201cI felt like I should go home and be part of the wave of Indigenous creatives in film and television,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I\u2019m really glad I did.\u201d Now based in Wallaceburg, Ont., Thomas explores contemporary Indigenous identity and experience. Her films including <em>Redlights<\/em> (2023), <em>Aberdeen<\/em> (2024), and <em>Nika &amp; Madison<\/em>, a feminist crime thriller premiering this year\u2014all place Indigenous women at the centre. They were also all shown for the first time at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiff.net\/\">TIFF<\/a>. Thomas\u2019s relationship with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiff.net\/\">TIFF<\/a> deepened through the Filmmaker Lab and Every Story Accelerator in 2023, where she joined 25 directors from around the world for mentorship from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1118229\/\">Danis Goulet<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0576548\/\">Deepa Mehta<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0362005\/\">Miranda Harcourt<\/a>, as well as master classes with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1503575\/\">Barry Jenkins<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000160\/\">Ethan Hawke<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000500\/\">Richard Linklater<\/a>. \u201cIt was a very supportive environment,\u201d she says. \u201cAll of us are still in a group chat together.\u201d Finding community, Thomas says, is key to longevity in the industry. She poses a challenge to aspiring filmmakers. \u201cWhat do you have to say about the world we live in, about the challenges we\u2019re facing as human beings?\u201d she asks. Awards are gratifying, she acknowledges, but they\u2019re not the measure of a career. \u201cYour growth as an artist over time,\u201d she insists, \u201cis equally important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/tiff-at-50-1-1024x683.jpg?wsr\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-623067\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/tiff-at-50-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/tiff-at-50-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/tiff-at-50-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/tiff-at-50-1.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image courtesy of TIFF.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm3401111\/\">Fawzia Mirza<\/a> is dedicated to centring \u201cMuslim women, queer, and trans people as real, human, complex, and joyful protagonists.\u201d As a queer, South Asian, Muslim creative based between Toronto and Los Angeles, Mirza took an unconventional route to filmmaking. \u201cI\u2019m a lawyer-turned-actor on a lawyer\u2019s debt,\u201d she says, \u201cwho started writing because there weren\u2019t a lot of roles for me. Then I started directing and stopped acting because I finally found my true calling.\u201d Her debut feature, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiff.net\/events\/the-queen-of-my-dreams-with-fawzia-mirza\"><em>The Queen of My Dreams<\/em><\/a> (2023), premiered at TIFF, BFI London, and SXSW, earning 14 awards and the Directors\u2019 Guild of Canada\u2019s Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement In Feature Film. But the decision to direct the film herself came only after a pivotal moment at the TIFF Writers\u2019 Studio in 2020. \u201cI had been telling everyone I needed to find a queer, Muslim, brown director,\u201d she recalls. \u201cMy fellow writers said, \u2018Why not you?\u2019\u201d That encouragement, paired with the creative energy of TIFF\u2019s Filmmaker Lab, gave her the push to claim her place at the helm of her project. In addition to directing episodes of television shows such as <em>Deli Boys<\/em> and developing two new feature comedies, Mirza runs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babydaalproductions.com\/\">Baby Daal Productions<\/a>, a company dedicated to championing emerging filmmakers, particularly queer Muslim Pakistani voices. Recent projects include<em> Poreless<\/em> by Akbar Hamid,<em> Witness<\/em> by Radha Mehta and Saif Jaan, and <em>The Curfew<\/em> by Shehrezad Maher. \u201cWe need to see ourselves, and we need the rest of the world to see us,\u201d Mirza says, \u201cso we can imagine a future where we not only survive but thrive.\u201d Her advice to newcomers is both pragmatic and inspiring. \u201cYou have to be relentless and you have to be undeniable,\u201d says Mirza. \u201cKnow what you have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
