Working on the third season of HBO\u2019s&nbsp;<em>T<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gildedagehbo\/?hl=en\">he Gilded Age<\/a><\/em>, things began to click for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/deneebenton\/?hl=en\">Den\u00e9e Benton<\/a> when she revisited her character\u2019s distinct 19th-century New York lilt. \u201cWe have an incredible dialect coach, Howard Samuelsohn,\u201d she explains. When Benton, who plays secretary-turned-reporter Peggy Scott, dials into our early morning Zoom, her cool-girl baby bangs are a far cry from her character\u2019s 1880s updos. \u201cEvery time I have my first session back with him and get Peggy\u2019s voice, it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, OK, she\u2019s back.\u2019 From there, everything kind of aligns.\u201d The corset helps too, with the at-attention posture it demands. \u201cYou just physically can\u2019t slouch\u2026or breathe much,\u201d she adds. This was compounded by the jarring experience of attending predominantly white schools. \u201c[With] the desirability politics of that\u2026as a Black girl, it takes you a really long time to realize that you are beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She traces the arc: the empowered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/indiaarie\/?hl=en\">India.Arie <\/a>phase, the shaved head, the five tattoos in a single summer, the hair that went blond, then black, then purple. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m kind of settling now,\u201d she says. \u201cWhere there\u2019s not so much reclaiming happening.\u201d Over the years, Benton has described her&nbsp;<em>Gilded Age<\/em>&nbsp;character as a sort of \u201cspiritual ancestor.\u201dFrom her very first scene, Peggy Scott, an ultra-driven member of New York\u2019s Black elite, is an on-screen anomaly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2-1-683x1024.jpg?wsr\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2-1-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2-1-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jacket by Coach; dress by Diotima. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Too often, Black life in period dramas is only shown through the lens of servitude.&nbsp;<em>The Gilded<\/em> <em>Age&nbsp;<\/em>breaks that mould. And though it isn\u2019t a fantastical reimagination of history, like <em>Bridgerton<\/em>, it doesn\u2019t strictly narrow its gaze on Black struggle or pain.
