Two decades later at age 27, she\u2019s now vice president at one of the world\u2019s most renowned winemakers, and the first woman in 12 generations of Latours to work in the family business. \u201cI am really glad to be following in the footsteps of my ancestors,\u201d she says. \u201cBurgundy is different from what it used to be and women are taking more leadership roles across the industry. The terroirs of Burgundy\u2014the combination of soil makeup, sun exposure, and other factors that make each of the region\u2019s vineyards unique\u2014are so vital to the character of these wines, and to French culture as a whole, that they were granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2015.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maison Louis Latour, founded in 1797 in the C\u00f4te de Beaune, is one of the most well-known names in the region and one of its biggest producers of grands crus\u2014a designation reserved for the highest quality French wines. \u201cIt really is a privilege to be able to tell so many people the story of my ancestors, how they first started in Aloxe-Corton, and how that led us to today,\u201d Latour says. \u201cIt is also a beautiful legacy to protect, and we are glad to uphold the family\u2019s story and ensure continuity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"http:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/8-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/8-9.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/8-9-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/8-9-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/8-9-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Courtesy of Maison Louis Latour.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Latour is among a new generation of wine industry leaders working to ensure the future of their centuries-old craft while maintaining a healthy respect for the ways of the past. \u201cAbove all else, quality matters to us, and that starts with our growing practices,\u201d she explains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1500\" src=\"http:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/4-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57020\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/4-13.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/4-13-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/4-13-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/4-13-768x1152.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Courtesy of Maison Louis Latour.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A long-time leader in sustainable agriculture in Burgundy, Louis Latour doesn\u2019t use pesticides or other chemicals and relies on a mix of modern and antique techniques to take care of the soil and vines. \u201cFor example, we still use horse-drawn ploughs but have also implemented a lightweight vine-straddle robot that has less of an impact than on the soil,\u201d Latour says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the culture of wine changes around the world, Latour is intent on helping her family business adapt to changing tastes and drinking habits while spreading the gospel of Grand Cru Burgundy far and wide. \u201cWhile people may be drinking less, they are drinking better,\u201d she says.
