Its many offshoots, which encompass Fuorisalone, come alive in the city\u2019s most unexpected venues\u2014from uninhabited palaces to former factories. And unlike Fashion Week, which is invite only, Design Week (or simply Salone) is open to all. The Milanese drink it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Palazzo Serbelloni, a Neo-Classical palace briefly inhabited by Napoleon, is one such venue\u2014transformed for the week by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.louisvuitton.com\/eng-ca\/homepage\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ca.louisvuitton.com\/eng-ca\/homepage\" target=\"_blank\">Louis Vuitton<\/a> as a showcase for the house\u2019s multi-faceted Salone presentation. Part ephemeral installation, part furniture showcase, Vuitton invited collaborators to explore what its codes of travel could mean for design.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"16667\" height=\"9375\" src=\"http:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/SALONEDELMOBILE2023_AOL__4000x.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40104\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In the palazzo\u2019s arched courtyard, French architect Marc Fornes imagines a larger than life bubble-like sculpture mimicking the shapes of underwater coral for guests to get lost in. It\u2019s a perfect example of what the house calls \u201cnomadic architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Up a spiral staircase, and displayed in contrast to the palazzo\u2019s many-frescoed ceilings, is the latest exhibition of Vuitton\u2019s Objet Nomades, a collection of modern furniture and homewares that has grown to 60 pieces since its inception in 2012. Objet is an ongoing collaboration between the luxury house and internationally-renowned designers including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marcelwanders\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marcelwanders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marcel Wanders<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rawedgesdesignstudio\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/rawedgesdesignstudio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raw Edges<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/estudiocampana\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/estudiocampana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Campana<\/a>, who have been invited to create pieces inspired by the idea of bringing far-flung worlds home. Of this year\u2019s 11 new additions, four are designed by Swiss design firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/atelier_oi\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/atelier_oi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">atelier o\u00ef<\/a>, who explored the possibilities of working with Vuitton\u2019s signature leather. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ATELIER-OI_QUETZAL-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ATELIER-OI_QUETZAL-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ATELIER-OI_QUETZAL-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ATELIER-OI_QUETZAL-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ATELIER-OI_QUETZAL-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ATELIER-OI_QUETZAL-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Quetzal by atelier o\u00ef.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Case in point: flying atop the exhibition is a group of decorative mobiles designed in the shapes of South American Quetzal birds. Thirteen twisting feather-like strips are covered with pieces of Vuitton leather\u2014blue on one side, green on the other, with their edges dyed red. The final feather, longer to give the mobile balance, is covered in red leather and recalls the birds\u2019 vermilion breasts. Their magic is in their movement\u2014tropical birds perpetually in flight.\u201c When you observe the Quetzal, you can feel like you\u2019re in South America. It\u2019s not the object travelling, it\u2019s the object showing you a moment of travel,\u201d says Aurel Aebi, who helms o\u00ef alongside Armand Louis and Patrick Reymond. The Quetzals are exhibited alongside origami leather bowls ingeniously made from a single cut of leather twisted and molded into a circular shape. Both are examples of what the o\u00ef team calls \u201cstorytecture\u201d\u2014transforming materials to tell stories in unique ways. In the case of working with leather, the o\u00ef team references the material\u2019s inherent pliability as a root for organic experimentation. \u201cPeople say form follows function, but we say it follows emotion,\u201d says Aebi.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"820\" src=\"http:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ATELIER-OI_PIVA-LAMP_PHILIPPE-LACOMBE-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ATELIER-OI_PIVA-LAMP_PHILIPPE-LACOMBE-2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ATELIER-OI_PIVA-LAMP_PHILIPPE-LACOMBE-2-300x246.jpg 300w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ATELIER-OI_PIVA-LAMP_PHILIPPE-LACOMBE-2-768x630.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Piva Lamp by atelier o\u00ef.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Another of Vuitton\u2019s collaborators, Atelier Biagetti, explores through its creation of the <em>Flower Tower<\/em>, a glowing column lamp inspired by Vuitton\u2019s iconic monogram. \u201cAnother way of travelling is through your mind,\u201d says Laura Baldassari, one half of the multi-disciplinary design studio which she helms alongside her husband, Alberto Biagetti. Made from hand-blown Italian glass, the tower\u2019s light source appears to be levitating\u2014a result of ingenious, upward-facing rings of LED lights which are then reflected and diffused within each column of glass. \u201cWe wanted to design something that is not a lamp; it\u2019s an object that is pure light,\u201d says Biagetti. \u201cFrom a certain point of view, people might think it\u2019s not a lamp, but a luminous sculpture.\u201d Positivity is the ultimate inspiration for the duo, who previously created a table inspired by sea anemones for the Objet collection. \u201cWe think the stories behind the objects are more important than the objects themselves,\u201d says Baldassari. \u201cThey\u2019re like actors in a scene\u2014they can tell many stories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em>All images courtesy of Louis Vuitton.
