And though I\u2019ve never met Lyonne in person, her raspy smoker\u2019s voice comes through the line like an old friend\u2014soothing in its familiarity, even when she\u2019s gone off on a tangent about the area\u2019s roadkill problem. \u201cThey\u2019re known for their prisons and Lyme disease,\u201d she says flatly. \u201cI know a lot of people love it, so I am questioning my friends who live up there. It\u2019s all for good reason, though\u2014she describes her role in <em>Poker Face <\/em>as one she\u2019s always wanted to play. The 10-episode mystery series is set to arrive on Peacock in 2023, and though details on the project are few and far between, it\u2019s already stacked with a stellar cast that includes Adrien Brody, Ellen Barkin, Judith Light, and frequent Lyonne collaborator Chlo\u00eb Sevigny. <em>Poker Face <\/em>is the first television effort from Rian Johnson, the writer\u2013director behind mega-success <em>Knives Out<\/em>, so it\u2019s easy to understand her enthusiasm. The show <em>Russian Doll<\/em>\u2014which she co-created, stars in, executive produces, and sometimes directs\u2014received widespread critical acclaim, earning 14 Emmy nominations and three wins for its psychedelic yet poignant take on the human condition. In <em>Russian Doll<\/em>, Lyonne plays Nadia, a woman who is caught in a time loop\u2014at her 36th birthday in season one, and then two days away from her 40th birthday in season two. Season two, which premiered on Netflix in April, sees Nadia travelling on a liminal 6 Train that goes back to 1982 New York City, where she soon discovers that she is trapped inside the body of her mother, played by Sevigny. By travelling even further back in time to Second World War\u2013era Germany, Nadia tries to change the course of her family\u2019s history, encountering mystery and generational trauma along the way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"798\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Natasha-Lyonne-4-798x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35731\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Natasha-Lyonne-4-798x1024.jpg 798w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Natasha-Lyonne-4-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Natasha-Lyonne-4-768x985.jpg 768w, https:\/\/smagazineofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Natasha-Lyonne-4.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Sweater by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/maisonvalentino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Valentino<\/a>.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Russian Doll <\/em>is a lot to hold on your shoulders, so to have somebody like Chlo\u00eb there to feel that genuine \u2018I love you, I got you, you\u2019re my friend for life\u2019 is [incredible].\u201d Sevigny and Lyonne have been the closest of friends since back in the \u201990s, when the two filmed <em>Detroit Rock City <\/em>in Toronto. \u201cThere\u2019s something to be said for that chemistry and lived-in familiarity between actors\u2014the camera really enjoys it because it makes everything more real,\u201d she says of their frequent collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sevigny was also on hand when her friend hosted the season finale of <em>Saturday Night Live <\/em>in May. \u201cI was maybe the happiest I\u2019ve been in my whole life while I was there,\u201d Lyonne says of the experience, which had her shapeshifting from a \u201950s sportscaster into an aging hippie. \u201c<em>SNL <\/em>is like the arts on steroids: everything is happening [at once]. It\u2019s almost like you\u2019re going to get pushed out of a helicopter to go skydiving. I\u2019ll never lose perspective around that,\u201d she says. She\u2019s referring to a stretch of the aughts when she struggled with substance abuse. \u201cIt\u2019s wild, but I\u2019ll tell you this: they didn\u2019t make it f&#8211;cking easy. It\u2019s definitely the opposite of an overnight sensation over here, so I don\u2019t know that I\u2019ll ever lose that bit of New York chip on my shoulder of, like, \u2018Took you guys a while,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s been a lot of years and a lot of work, but the bigger side of that double-edged [sword] is the truth, which is: holy s&#8211;t, I\u2019m so grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who came of age during the \u201990s, Lyonne has always been here, whether it was starring in a slew of cult classics like <em>Slums of Beverly Hills <\/em>and <em>But I\u2019m a Cheerleader <\/em>or the blockbuster <em>American Pie <\/em>franchise, which made her a household name alongside early aughts stars like Tara Reid and Mena Suvari.
